I have been caring for senior animals for more than 15 years. It is my privilege and honor to share about each of those precious animals. I hope these little glimpses into the lives of our past retirees will show you the love and care provided for them at Furever In Him and the desire to continue providing that love and care to many more! Click on the retiree’s name or picture to read more about them. Buster is the first to be posted with the rest to come. I will also be updating snapshot stories to the News/Furever Blog over time as well.
Don’t forget, you can be part of the lives of our retirees by becoming a monthly partner with us or making a one time donation by clicking Give. Thank you for your support in providing forever homes to senior animals in need!
Billy was a classroom pet. He found his way to several foster homes before finally settling in with me. Billy lived with me for 4+ years and was well into his senior years when he passed away. He was the first pet I had in my own apartment. He was the first senior I took care of. Billy was the one that had me wondering if there was such a thing as a retirement home or nursing home for animals. His story can be read over at the News/Furever Blog.
Dakota was my “real life boy” and my very first four-legged best friend. Dakota was a 2006 pet store purchase. I had no idea where pet store pups came from. I had no idea that they could be puppy mill pups. All I knew, was that the pet store allowed you to play with the pups and then put them back. I could never put him back and so I didn’t. I rescued him from that store. He was just three months old. Dakota went with me everywhere. He was my boy and I was his mom. God used him to open up my heart to even more animals. The love was planted with Dakota and has bloomed ever since. Dakota lived to the age of 6. He was just beginning his senior years when he got sick and tragically passed away. I cry remembering all of my “kids”, but most of all my sweet precious Dakota. His full story will be shared soon!
Rosie entered my life in 2013. She was sent to me just four days after Dakota passed away. Rosie was from an animal shelter about two hours south of where I was living at the time. I found her online and filled out an application never dreaming I would be able to call her my own. Rosie was a Christmas present dog that had been given up because she was not a “good fit”. It is also believed she may have been in a puppy mill set to be a mama before finding her first home. When she ended up at the shelter, she was a scrawny little two-year-old pup that went by the name “Angel”. She never responded to that name hence the reason I changed it to Rosie. However, she was my angel. She filled my arms when Dakota left them. Rosie was by my side for nearly 12 years. She was my sidekick and helped rescue five seniors before becoming a senior herself. Rosie may have left my life in 2024, but I will never forget her. Her full story will be posted soon!
Buster came into our lives in 2013 just six months after Rosie. Buster was advertised as the Senior Pet of the Month at the shelter Rosie was rescued from. He caught my eye since I was looking for a companion for Rosie. Sure, he was old and only had one-eye, but he was a Pomeranian and such a unique color of all black. He looked so sweet and I thought “why not”? Seniors need homes too. So Buster was adopted for a suggested donation of $50 due to his age being somewhere between 12 and 15. Buster had been surrendered to the shelter due to age and frequent urinating in the home. It was also believed that Buster had been living on and off on the streets. Even with his bladder stone surgeries, dental issues, and constant care for the only eye he had, Buster was the best little old man dog. He lived with us for three and a half years before his age caught up with him. You can read more of his story here.
Farthing first came to us as a weekend guest in late fall of 2016. His companion pup had passed away and he was missing her greatly. Farthing’s mom brought him over on the weekends to play with Rosie and Buster. Farthing was unsure at first, but soon grew to enjoy his visits. Near the end of 2016, Farthing’s family was faced with the tough decision of moving back home to New Zealand to care for their elderly parents. Farthing was 15 at the time and they were worried he wouldn’t make the long trip much less be able to handle the long process of quarantine and separation from his family. I hated this for his family as they had had Farthing since he was a puppy. After much thought and prayer, I offered to let Farthing become part of my family. His family was thrilled that he would be in a home he already knew and loved. Farthing lived with us until he passed at 17 years of age. You can read more about Farthing soon!
JoJo was a very unique find. In 2017, I had Buster, Farthing and Rosie living with me. Sadly, Buster passed away and my trio was back to a duo. I knew I wanted three and I knew I wanted to rescue another senior so I joined several Facebook groups and kept an eye out for online listings on Petfinder and other sites. In July of 2017, JoJo appeared in a local Facebook group as a “free to a good home”. Her owner had recently passed away leaving behind JoJo and two younger dogs. Sadly, homes were only found for the younger ones. JoJo wasn’t easy to place because of her age which was thought to be 13 or 14. I reached out to learn about JoJo. I found out she had been rescued by her owner after being dumped on a road somewhere in the south. I wanted to make sure she had a soft landing after her recent loss. I met with JoJo and the adopters in a school parking lot. I brought Rosie and Farthing with me to meet her. They took to her immediately. JoJo was shy, but she readily came with us. Over time she adjusted to us and joined us on many adventures. She ended up having all of her teeth pulled a year later, but that didn’t slow her down. JoJo stayed with us until she passed in late 2019. Her story will be posted soon!
