Buster the One-Eyed Pirate / Little Old Man Dog

Buster came to live with us in 2015. I knew I wanted to help senior animals, but it wasn’t until Buster came into our lives that I knew I wanted to do it full-time.

I received an email from a shelter I had recently adopted my two-year-old spunky Pomeranian Rosie from (more on her story later). Buster was the featured Senior Pet of the Month for the shelter. He was estimated to be between 12 and 15 years old. He was surrendered due to frequent urinating in the home, dental issues, eye health (he only had one eye), among other things. The shelter believed he had lived on and off on the streets for a time as well.

Rosie and I drove two hours south to meet Buster. Rosie was in need of a companion (although I worked from home) and we wanted to see if Buster would be a good fit. The two Pom Poms met and the rest is history. Buster came home with us that day. He barked the whole two hour drive home. When we finally got home, he was so excited to explore and Rosie was happy to “show” him around.

Buster had health issues over the years that we gladly took on. Turns out, his frequent urination in the house was due to bladder stones. Our vet removed those and Buster was accident free for a time. Buster also needed daily eye drops in his one good eye. He was such a good boy to get his drops. He knew they provided much relief.

As he aged, Buster developed another bladder stone (despite being on a prescription diet, etc.). He also had some incontinence issues unrelated to the stones. This was when I discovered the cutest little washable belly band diapers for male dogs. Buster wore his like a superstar and thought he was the cutest pup on the planet!

Buter and Rosie, my precious “Pomeranian Pair” went on road trips with me to see the Lighthouses of Maine and to visit my family in Florida. He was the cuddliest little pup. He loved to be rocked. He hated shots, but as long as “Mama” held him he was OK. Buster lived with us for three and half years before his age caught up with him and we parted ways.

He is missed daily and will be loved forever.
